Since September 2012, VU University Amsterdam and the University of Amsterdam are offering a joint Master’s programme within the Amsterdam Centre for Ancient Studies and Archaeology (ACASA). Thanks to this partnership, students can choose from a wide range of subjects, allowing them to develop as scholars in many different specialisms in the field of Classics, Ancient Studies en Archaeology.

Research interests

  • Reception of Classical Antiquity in Modern Dutch Poetry, e.g. in the works of Cees Nooteboom and in the poems, translations and papers of  Ida Gerhardt (1905-1997)
  • In november 2006 Stichting Fonds voor de Letteren en de Vlaams-Nederlandse Adviescommissie Literaire Non-Fictie has granted me a subsidy for writing a biography of the Dutch poet and classicist Ida Gerhardt
  • Horace, Satires
  • Lucretius De rerum natura, Latin Didactic Poetry

Teaching

  • Period 1: Latijn Taalverwerving 1a: letters written by e.g. Pliny and Cicero for first-year BA students Major Latijn en Oudheidkunde
  • Period 2-3: Vergil’s Bucolica, Georgica and Aeneis for second-year BA students Latin and Oudheidkunde with Latin
  • Latijn Basiscursus 1b: elementary course for first-year BA-students of Latin
  • Period 4 & 5: Mastercourse Latin on the Reception of Classical Antiquity for fourth-year MA students Latin &
  • Participation in Minor ‘Bijbels en Klassiek Verhalengoed’ (Bible and Classical Mythology and Literature) for second and third-year BA students

Research

  • Ida Gerhardt: Having written a monography on the reception of Classical Antiquity (esp. Lucretius, Vergil, Sappho, Plato and Homer) in the works of the Dutch poet and classicist Ida Gerhardt (Stralend in gestrenge samenhang, 2002), I have published an edition of the letters written by her: Courage!, 2005. Now I am working on her biography. Recently my colleague Ben Hosman and I have launched a website devoted to this poet: www.idagerhardt.nl
  • Horace Satires: together with Caroline Kroon I am working on textlinguistic analysis of the coherence and structure of these poems
  • Lucretius’ didactic poem De rerum natura against the background of Greek and Roman Natural Sciences
