Research
Current Research
At the moment I am researching the image of the Caribbean in British literature from the 18th to the mid-19th century. I am studying the way in which several key groups such as the Creole sugar planters and pirates were used in British literature as figures of fear and transgression against which Britishness became defined and clarified. My work has become more concentrated on questions of the construction of the British nation and nationality which is particularly relevant to contemporary developments in postcolonial theory and debates about the importance of colonial history in shaping "the nation" since the 18th Century.
