Research

In my recent work I have focused on Dutch Architectural Culture of the Early Modern Age, and the role of the public and of publications by non-architects on architecture, published between 1680 and 1830 or a period also known as the long eighteenth century. As it turns out, these amateurs have played a crucial part in the establishment of an idiosyncratic and typically Dutch architectural climate, that up until now, has gone almost unnoticed outside the Netherlands. My research on this topic will be concluded with a book entitled Passion and Control: Dutch Architectural culture in the Eighteenth Century, to be published in 2012 by Ashgate Publishing (Aldershot). In 2006 I published Paleizen voor prinsen en burgers. Architectuur in Nederland in de Achttiende Eeuw, which deals with the so-called 'era without architects', the architecture for the stadholders of Orange, Teylers Oval Museum Room, the Amsterdam House of Correction and the building of the Society of Felix Meritis. More recently, I have been working on articles on Petrus Camper, Jacob Otten Husly's Lectures on Antiquity, the Amsterdam Grachtenboek, Architectural Exchanges, Historiography, and developing a new line of research on 'exotic architecture'.

This website, initiated by Kimberley Skelton and myself, explores global, interdisciplinary frameworks for the architecture (design, theory, and practice) of Europe and its colonies, c.1400-c.1800. This site particularly disseminates and fosters international scholarly exchange of innovative research and education.  We seek to showcase new methodologies that link areas of architectural history, art history, and the humanities.
