On September 1st 2009, Frits Scholten has been appointed professor of Museum Policies and Collecting at the department of Art History at the Faculty of Arts.
Frits Scholten ( Hengelo, 1959) is senior curator of sculpture at the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam. He has published widely on Northern European sculpture and decorative arts. Among his recent publications are his doctoral thesis ‘Sumptuous Memories, Studies in 17th-century Dutch tomb sculpture’ (Zwolle 2003), ‘Eine höhere Wirklichkeit, Deutsche und Französische Skulptur 1200-1600 aus dem Rijksmuseum Amsterdam’ (with Guido de Werd; Munich & Berlin 2004), and ‘From Vulcan’s Forge, Bronzes from the Rijksmuseum 1450-1800’ (Daniel Katz Ltd, London 2005). He curated the exhibitions ‘Adriaen de Vries, imperial sculptor’ (Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, Nationalmuseum Stockholm, The J. Paul Gettymuseum Los Angeles, 1998-1999) and ‘Willem van Tetrode sculptor / Guglielmo Fiammingo Scultore’ (Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, The Frick Collection New York 2003). He is editor of the ‘Nederlands Kunsthistorisch Jaarboek’, ‘The Wallraf-Richartz Museum Jahrbuch’ and ‘Kunstschrift’.
The first semester of 2009-2010 he will provide a seminar for MA- and Mphil-students entitled ‘The Dutch Museum Landscape; by means of the genesis of several representative museums’.
