Research:

Health information is one of the most popular topics on the internet: over seventyfive percent of the Dutch online surfers have searched for this type of information on the internet. The internet offers several ways to inform patient and to communicate with them thanks to interactive and multimodal features. However, there’s no consensus about the effectivity of interactive web applications in health communication. On top of that a significant number of people do not possess a high enough level of health literacy to understand and use the information effectively.

In this study I examine how online medical information for a specific patient population should be designed in order to meet the different information needs and levels of health literacy. For that purpose I am interviewing health professionals and patients, I am observing online search behavior, I am measuring the level of health literacy and other relevant characteristics of patients and I am building a corpus of health websites.

I conduct my research under supervision of Wilbert Spooren, Frans Meijman, Maaike van den Haak and José Sanders.
