Research interests
Field archaeology and landscape archaeology; the archaeology of Celto-Germanic societies and their integration into the Roman empire; ethnicity and ethnogenesis in the Roman empire; Late Iron Age coinage.

Roymans gives a wide range of courses of the bachelor and the master program of Archaeology
Research
Roymans is leader of several current research programs, which are funded by the Dutch Science Organisation (NWO). Each of the programs includes several projects for PhD students and/or postdocs.
- The Batavians: Ethnic identity in a frontier situation.
- The biography of a sandy landscape: cultural history, heritage management and spatial planning in the Southern Netherlands
- Rural communities in the civitas Batavorum and their integration into the Roman empire
- Roman villa landscapes in the North: economy, culture, life-styles
Archaeological fieldwork:
Scientific director of a wide range of archaeological fieldwork projects in the Netherlands. The excavations are linked to the research agenda of the ACVU and carried out by the Hendrik Brunsting Stichting of the ACVU. Among the recently investigated sites are Roman-period rural settlements in the Dutch river area (Tiel-Passewaay, Geldermalsen), major Roman temple sites (Kessel, Elst), and multi-period settlement excavations in the sandy landscape of the Southern Netherlands (Weert, Nederweert, Someren).
