Research interests
Modern and contemporary art, art criticism, art and media theoryTeaching
In the first year of the BA programme I teach an Introduction on visual art together with Ingrid Vermeulen; I also teach several courses on the MA level, including a seminar on art criticism periods 4/5), the seminar Reading Concepts of Intermediality (periods 1 and 2, with Ginette Verstraete) and a course on theoretical and practical approaches to images, Imagining the Image, with Koos Bosma (period 1/ 2). I also act as a supervisor for Bachelor and Master theses.Research
During the past few years I have been working on an exhibition and a book on art and iconoclasm, in the context of the resurgent monotheistic critique of ‘idolatrous’ images. The exhibition took place in 2008/2009 at BAK, Basis voor actuele kunst at Utrecht; the book, Idols of the Market: Modern Iconoclasm and the Fundamentalist Spectacle, was published in June 2009 by Sternberg Press.
One of my projects for the near future is a book – partly based on existing articles – about film, video, reenactment, and the representation of history.
