Finding and consulting literature is an essential part of your study. VU University Library (UB VU) can help you get started in search of the right literature. Visit the website http://www.ub.vu.nl/ or go to the library desk on the 9th floor.

The best place to find literature and expertise is the library for your academic discipline. You can ask both general and more specific questions there.

Collections

UB VU strives to provide VU students and staff with scientific information that is relevant to their fields of study and is closely attuned to the Faculties' education and research programmes.

E-library

UB VU offers an ever growing part of its collection in electronic form. Using the e-Library system you can search journal articles, e-books and other publications from various collections with one single search. e-Library contains all of the UB VU collections and a number of large files to which the library provides access. For a targeted search (a book, a journal, a database) it is better to use the Catalogue, e-Journals (the database of journals) or e-Resources (all files to which the library provides access).

All e-Journals, e-Resources and e-Books are also included in the Catalogue.

Your VU-net ID gives you access to all of the online materials of UB VU from home or elsewhere.

Exam literature is made available in the special cabinets at the front of the 9th-floor reading room. These books can be borrowed for one day. Exceeding this period carries a fine of €2.50 per day.

Current volumes of all printed journals for the Humanities are available in the room in front of the 10th-floor reading room. Older volumes may be reserved through the online catalogue and at the daily lending desk on the 9th floor.

Borrowing or ordering documents

With your library or student pass you can borrow materials from the Catalogue. You can also renew borrowed books or cancel reservations. Documents outside UB VU may be borrowed from other libraries using inter-library loans (ILL).

Courses or workshops

For an introduction to efficient literature research you can follow a workshop or web course in information skills at UB VU:

  • Level A (first-year students)
  • Level B (advanced first-year students)
  • Level C (students writing a thesis)
